16U Texas Storm Finishes 3rd in the 16U Louisville Slugger Independence Day Tournament

July 3, 2004 - 16U Texas Storm coached by Ronn Dixon and 16U California OC Batbusters coached by Doug Myers met in a 10:30am Sunday game in the Winner's Bracket Semi Finals at Stazio Complex in the Louisville Slugger Independence Day Tournament in Boulder, Colorado. Texas Storm reached the bracket game by defeating New Jersey Pride 4-2, Colorado Comets 2-1 and Virginia Stars 2-0. The CA OC Batbusters also won 4 games. They beat the 16U California Case Batbusters 3-0.

The California OC Batbusters scored 1st in the 2nd inning. Catcher Jennifer Smith hit a fly on the 3rd base baseline for a single. Crystal Gonzalez was substituted for Jennifer at 1st to run the bases. Aja Paculba struck-out for out No. 1. Toni Paisley singled up the middle moving Crystal to 2nd base. Rachel Hebert flied out to center fielder Mariza Martinez. Jessica Marlow then hit a grounder to the Storm 2nd baseman who had trouble finding the handle on ball. The Storm 2nd baseman threw home, but Crystal was safe. Toni moved over to 3rd base on the play. Jessica stole 2nd base when the next batter was batting. The next batter flied out to the center fielder to end the inning. 

The Califronia OC Batbuster scored again in the 4th inning. Aja Paculba flied out to short stop Cristina Winters from Kingwood. Toni Paisley hit a line drive to left center for a single. Rachel Hebert hit a line drive to right field almost behind first base for a single. The right fielder threw to 3rd to get Toni. Rachel moved to 2nd on the throw. Jessica Marlow popped up to the left fielder. Toni tagged up and scored. The score was now 2-0 in favor of the Batbusters.  The next batter grounded out to the short stop to end the inning.

Storm counteracted by scoring two runs to tie the game. Libby Dennis led off by drawing a walk. Katy Smith was substituted in to run for Libby since she was the pitcher. Amanda Crabtree hit a ground ball in the gap between short stop and 3rd base. The short stop could only knock down the ball, so Amanda was safe at 1st base. Courtney Pettit struck-out on
an outside pitch. Ashley Miller laid down a sacrifice bunt. Catcher Jennifer Smith retieved the bunt and threw to 1st to get Ashley. Meanwhile Katy went to 3rd and Amanda went to 2nd. Angela Willis then hit a line drive in the gap between center and left field for a single scoring Katy. Jana Creel was substituted in to run for Angela. Cristina Winters drew a walk. The walk moved Jana to 2nd. With bases loaded, Courtney Lavender hit a hard grounder that the short stop couldn't handle. Amanda scored and everyone else was safe. Rachel Hebert batted in place of Mariza Martinez. Rachel hit a grounder to the 1st baseman who tagged her out as she was going by. The score was 2-2.

The 2 runs scored by Texas Storm just made the Batbuster play harder. Brittany Lastrapes hit a line drive to center field for a single. McKenna Lowe laid down a sacrifice bunt that moved Brittany to 2nd base. Storm replaced pitcher Libby Dennis with Jennifer Smith. Ashley Ellis grounded out to the pitcher. This play moved Brittany to 3rd. Brittany scored on a pass
ball. Batbuster's Jennifer Smith placed her bunt down the first base line. The 1st baseman missed the tag and Jennifer was safe at 1st base. Aja Paculba laid down a bunt and was safe at 1st base on a fielder's choice. Libby Dennis re-entered as the pitcher. Toni Paisley walked. Rachel Hebert was safe at first. Jessica Marlow hit a line drive into the gap between
left and center field. Nicole Angene grounded out to the 2nd baseman for Out No. 2. Brittany Lastrapes hit a line drive that fell in between the short stop and pitcher for a single. Brittany stole 2nd. McKenna Lowe singled with a grounder to left field. Finally, Melissa Mendoza grounded out to the 3rd baseman to end the inning. The score was 9-2 and time had expired.

Libby Dennis pitched 4 2/3 innings for Texas Storm. Libby had 1 strike-out, 2 walks and gave-up 10 hits. College Sports Exposure radar Libby throwing between 58 and 61 mph. She had a change, rise, drop and screwball. Jennifer Smith pitched to 3 batters in the 5th inning. She struck-out no batters, walked none and gave-up no hits.

Alyssa Frieght pitched all 5 innings for the Batbusters. Alyssa had two strike-outs, walked 3 batters and gave-up 3 hits.  Alyssa main pitch was the rise ball. College Sports Exposure radared her rise ball at 58 mph. Her change-up was 45 mph.

Courtney Lavender, Amanda Crabtree, Angela Willis and Kierston Dixon had hits for the Storm. Courtney singled to center field in the 3rd inning. Amanda hit a hard grounder for a single in the 4th inning. Angela Willis hit a line drive in the left center gap for a single in the 4th inning. Kierston reached 1st on a well place drop bunt in the 5th inning.

With the win, California OC Batbusters moved on to play in the 16U Championship game against the Arizona Firecats. 16U Texas Storm settled for 3rd place. 

Texas Storm has already qualified for the 16U ASA Nationals in Bloomington, Indiana.  They
will also be playing in the 18U AFA Nationals in Beaumont, Texas.
