Arizona Suncats Knockout the Power in a Louisville Slugger Bracket Game

by Duane  Treybig

July 3, 2004 - 16U Texas Power coached by Jerry Glowacz and 16U Arizona Suncats coached by David Heeley met in a 4:00 pm Saturday game in the Winner's Bracket at the Louisville Sports Complex in the Louisville Slugger Independence Day Tournament
in Boulder, Colorado. Texas Power reached the bracket game by defeating Colorado Commotion.

It was a shut-out until the 7th inning. Arizona Suncats were at bat. There were two outs when K'Lee Arredond drew a walk. She stole 2nd base. Natalie Smith then hit a ground ball to the Power short stop who threw the ball towards first base but over the fence. K'Lee scored on the play and Arizona won 1-0. Arizona Suncats won the next two games and was playing against the California OC Batbusters 1G in the 16U Championship game when I left Stazio Sunday.

Excellent pitching by both teams was the main reason the game was a shut-out until the 7th inning. Shannon Smith (2007) from Cinco Ranch pitched the entire game for Houston Power. Shannon moved to Texas from California. Shannon had two strike-outs, walked 4 batters and gave-up 4 hits. College Sports Exposure radared Shannon throwing 58 to 60 mph.

Kim Klabough (2005) pitched the whole game for Arizona. Kim pitched a no hitter. She struck-out 11 batters and walked none. Kim had a great low rise ball. She changed speeds a lot. College Sports Exposure radared Kim throwing between 53 and 61 mph. Her change-up was 43 mph.

Natalie Smith, Jennifer Newman, Kim Klabough and Brittany Anderson got the 4 hits for Arizona. Natalie Smith singled to left field in the first inning. Brittany Anderson singled to left center in the 2nd inning. Jennifer Newman hit a Texas Leaguer that fell in behind 3rd base for a single in the 3rd inning. Kim Klabough hit a grounder up the middle for a single in the 4th
inning.

The loss by Power dropped them out of the tournament because bracket play was single elimination.
