Celeste Richert Homers to Lead Katy Past Mayde Creek

May 10, 2001 - This 5:00 pm Region III 5A Regional Quarterfinal softball game at Spring Branch Memorial High School featured Katy (30-2) and Mayde Creek (18-10). This Katy verse Mayde Creek game was settled early. In the 2nd inning with the scored tied 0-0 after freshman Kelsie Camarata had flied to the left fielder for out number one, junior Celeste Rickert hit a line drive homerun over the left field fence for Katy. 

Katy added two more runs to their 1-0 lead in the 6th inning. Senior Tiffany Anders lined a single in the gap between left and center field. Junior Collen Brownell tried to bunt Tiffany to 2nd but popped it up to first baseman A. J. Devries for out number one. Then Erin Gray hit a grounder to the Mayde Creek short stop Kristen Glowacz who got the lead runner out at 2nd. Glowazc is a University of Houston signee. Katy Maxey then hit a line drive single in the hole between short stop and third to put runners at 1st and 2nd. Megan Gore then hit the third pitch to Glowacz who fumbled the ball and then threw high to 1st base. Gray and Maxey but scored on the throwing error. 

Sophomore Katy Maxey (28-2) pitched all 7 innings for Katy. She shut-out Mayde Creek giving up only two hits and striking out one. Maxey kept the balls the majority of the time in the infield by hitting the corners of the plate and throwing different speeds. She pitched with confidence. 

Freshman Angelica (A.J.) Devries started for Mayde Creek and took the lost since she gave up the homerun to Rickert. She was replaced in the third inning by freshman Ashley Bramhall. In the 4th inning, College Sports Exposure radar Bramhall's fastball at 59 mph. Ashley was replaced in the 7th inning after one out by sophomore Shonda Poppy who got Collen Brownell to ground to the third baseman and then struck-out Erin Gray to end the inning. 

Katy got 5 hits off the Mayde Creek pitching staff. Celeste Rickert added a lead off double to her homerun in the 7th inning. Tiffany Anders had two singles. Tiffany is a University of Texas in Austin signee. She started the game with a line drive single in the gap between the center and right fielder. In the 6th inning she went the other way.  She hit a line drive in the gap between the center and left fielder. Katy Maxey help her cause with the single in the 6th inning.

Junior Natalie Tijerina got both hits for Mayde Creek. In the 2nd inning, she hit a line drive between the short stop and 2nd base. In the 7th inning, she hit a ground ball by Maxey up the center of the field for a single.
