Cy-Creek Cougars Out Hits Magnolia for an Easy 5-1 Win

by Duane  Treybig

April 4, 2003 - Magnolia Bulldogs entered the game in 2nd place in District 16-5A with a 7-2 record and 17-2 over all record.  The Cy-Creek Lady Cougars were either 4th or 5th in District with a 4-6 record and 14-8 over-all record.  This look like another easy win for Magnolia.  However, Amanda Scarborough knee had got hit while pitching against Cy-Fair the previous Friday night and as a consequence she only played first base in this game.

The Lady Cougars took the lead in the 2nd inning. With two outs, sophomore Alyssa Davis drilled a line drive over Magnolia's 2nd baseman Tristle Cloud into the gap between center and right field for a triple. College Sports Exposure filmed Tristle's video last year.  Tereasa Hardison then hit a hard grounder to the short stop who dropped the ball before throwing to 1st base.  Tereasa was safe on the error at 1st and Alyssa Davis easily scored to give the Cougars a 1-0 lead.  Tereasa stole 2nd base and then moved to 3rd base on a pass ball. Kristy Maddox drew a walk and kept running to 2nd base. Tereasa was tagged out sliding into home for Out No. 3.

In the 4th inning, Cy-Creek added two insurance runs.  Jaime Adams singled down the left field line. She used her speed and promptly stole 2nd and 3rd base. With one out, Alyssa Davis hit a fly that fell in front of the Magnolia 2nd baseman. Alyssa beat the throw to 1st for a base hit.  Jaime scored to bring the lead to 2-0.  Tereasa Hardison then hit a double over the right fielder's head. Allysa Davis was tagged out at the plate for Out No. 2 when she tried to score.  Kristy Maddox reached 1st safely on a bunt and Tereasa scored.  Kristy ended up on 2nd base.  Kristy stole 3rd base.  The next batter pop-up to Amanda Scarborough at 1st
base to end the inning.

A three run lead in District 16-5A is never enough since the District is full of great hitters. So Cy-Creek added 2 more runs in the 5th. With two out, Jenny Matulich singled to right field. Jaime Adams followed with another single.  Monica Garcia then hit a double scoring both Jenny and Jaime.  Allysa Davis then hit a grounder to the pitcher who threw to 1st to get the 3rd out.

Magnolia got into the act of scoring in the 6th inning. Their pitcher, Ashley Kuchenski doubled
to left field.  Megan Mikeska dropped in a Texas Leaguer to score Ashley. The next batter hit to the 2nd baseman who threw to 1st base for the 1st out.  R Kos then hit a hard ground ball to short stop Jamie Adams who first looked the runner on 2nd back to the base and then threw to 1st to get the batter.  On the throw to 1st, Megan Mikeska broke for 3rd. First baseman Lauren Scalise, fired to third where Kristy Maddox applied the tag to complete the double play.

Magnolia tried to get on the score board again in the 7th.  Second baseman Tristle Cloud hit a
ground ball to Jaime Adams and reached first on a bad throw.  Amanda Scarborough then ripped an awesome line drive up to the left field fence. Left fielder Montana Patin got to the ball unbelievable quick and fired on target to short stop Jaimie Adams who threw home to
catcher Tereasa Hardison to get the out at the plate (a sliding Tristle Cloud). Amanda
advanced to 2nd base on the play. Unfortunately, Kim Cook grounded out to Jamie Adams
for Out No. 2 and Kim Cillis grounded out to Kristy Maddox for Out No. 3.

Kim Hair pitched all 7 innings for Cy-Creek. She had a no-hitter going until the 6th inning. Kim had 5 strike-outs and walked no batters. She gave-up 3 hits. Kim was primarily relying on a peel drop that she let slide off the right fingers of her hand for a inside drop and turned her hand over after peeling to hit the out side corner. College Sports Exposure radar Kim's fastball and peel drop between 58 and 60 mph in the 3rd and 6th innings.

Ashley Kuchenski (pictured to the right) pitched all 7 innings for Magnolia. She struck-out 2 batters and walked one batter. Ashley gave up 9 hits. College Sports Exposure radared Ashley pitches between 56 and 58 mph in the 4th inning.

Sophomore Alyssa Davis and senior Jamie Adams led the hitting attack.  Allysa had a triple to the right field gap in the 2nd inning and a single to right field in the 4th inning.  Jaime
hit a single in the 4th and 5th innings.  Kaleigh Courville, Jenny Matulich, Monica Garcia, Tereasa Hardison and Kristy Maddox had hits for the Cougar attack. Kaleigh hit a line drive
single up the middle in the 3rd inning.  Jenny had a single to right field in the 5th inning.  Monica doubled in the 5th inning. Tereasa hit a double to right field in the 4th inning.
Kristy hit a line drive single to left field in the 6th inning.

Cy-Creek owned the base paths. They had 5 stolen bases and no one was picked-off or thrown out.

Amanda Scarborough, Ashley Kuchenski and Megan Mikeska had the only hits for Magnolia. Amanda ripped a double to the fence in the 7th inning, Ashley doubled in the 6th inning and Megan singled in the 6th inning.

Defensively, Montana Patin (pictured on the right batting), Jamie Adams and Kristy Maddox supported Kim Hair's pitching effort.  In the 1st inning, Montana came up with the catch when R Kos hit a rocket shot to left field.  In the 6th inning, Montana chose to play deep when Megan Mikeska came up to bat. Megan hit a Texas Leaguer just verily out of the infield and Montana almost made the catch. Most importantly she kept the ball in front of her so no runners could not advance. In the 7th inning, she quickly ran down Amanda Scarborough's hit to the fence and then made a long and accurate throw to Jamie Adams who threw the runner out a the plate. Jamie also threw out 4 batters running to 1st base. Kristy was a vacuum cleaner at 3rd base. 6 batters grounded out to Kristy.
