23, 2001 - The U18 ASA Gold Qualifier Tournament got underway last night at the Katy Softball fields at 7:00 pm.
22 Teams are competing for a berth to the National Tournament in Marietta, Georgia.
College Sports Exposure watched the Spring-Klein Hawks play the Texas Vipers at 9:00 pm on field 5. Although, the Texas Vipers had Mel Jarrett (UT Signee), Samantha Hirsch (UT Signee), and Crista Hargrove (Stephen F. Austin Signee) who will play on the west squad at the upcoming Texas Girls Coaches Association All-Star game, this game was dominated by two power pitchers.
Spring-Klein Hawks had Christina Gwyn on the mound. Christina flew in from Big Springs for the tournament. In the 3rd inning, College Sports Exposure radared Christina's fastball at 63 and 64 mph and her drop at 61 mph.
Christina went the distance, pitching all 7 innings with ten strike-outs.
She gave up 3 walks and two base hits.
In the 3 inning, Jenness Wines recorded a single for the Vipers when she hit the ball in the crease between Jessie Wheeler playing short stop and Stacey Ramsey playing third.
Jenness beat Jessie's throw to first.
Jenness moved to 2nd on a pass ball, Melanie Jarrett struck-out and Lyndsey Bond walked.
Crista Hargrove then hit a line drive into the gap between center and right field.
Jennifer Chaney quickly got to the ball and threw Jenness out at the plate to
preserve the shut-out for Gwyn.
Texas Vipers had Audrey Pucket on the mound. Audrey pitched all seven innings for the Vipers. Pucket had two strike-outs and gave up 4 walks and 4 hits. Also, in the 3rd inning, College Sports Exposure clocked Audrey.
She threw one pitch at 63 mph, but all the rest were at 61 mph.
Spring-Klein got their winning run in the 2nd inning.
Lisa Lawler hit the ball to Short Stop Crista Hargrove
and reached first on a catching error by the first baseman.
Brooke Hooser sacrificed bunted Lisa to second base and Angie Johnson sacrificed Lisa to third with a hit to the first baseman who threw to
2nd Baseman Lyndsey Bond covering first to get the out.
Sarina Noack (from Tomball) got the game winning RBI when she slap the ball from the left side of the batters box between the first and 2nd basemen for a base hit.
Sarina showed some speed when she stole 2nd base but Annie Beckendorf ended the inning with a pop-up to
Crista Hargrove.
Annie Beckendorf had a single in the first inning for the Hawk's attack. Lisa Lawler and Brooker Hooser added singles in the 6th inning.
In other action Friday night, Austin Storm Blue beat Texas City Stars 6-5 and advanced to play Eclipse Gold
Saturday. Texas Comets eased by Spring-Klein Impact Gold by a score of 3-2.
Louisiana Gold defeated Magic Gold by a score of 3-2.
Texas Kaos shut-out the Cy-Fair Intruders 3-0, advancing to play the Austin Silver Travelers.
Katy Express Gold shut-out the Southern Cal Prestige Belles 4-0.
Houston Power beat Austin Storm Red.
