6, 2003 - The 2003 ASA Girls's 18U "Gold" Sector 3 Qualifier got
underway Friday night on July 6 at the Killeen Athletic Complex in Killeen,
Texas at 8:30 pm. At 10:15, Houston
Power played
Austin
Storm Blue on Field 1.
Power
scored two runs in the first inning to take an early lead.
Jessica Valis, a sophomore, from Shiner, Texas drew a walk.
Montana sacrifice bunted Jessica to 2nd.
While Kristina Sheppard was batting, Jessica stole 3rd. Kristina bunted for a base hit. While
Brooke Usher was batting, Christina stole 2nd base. Brooke bunted, and both Jessica and Kristina scored on the
play to give Power the 2-0 lead. Brooke
ended up on third base. Cara
Patranella was tagged out going to 1st for out No. 2. Haley Valis grounded to the pitcher who threw to first to get
the 3rd out.
Houston
Power added 3 insurance runs in the 2nd inning. Alex Colyer hit a double.
Carla Beutlich followed with another double which scored Alex. Crystal Sippel then hit a grounder to the short stop who
through to first for out No. 1. Carla
advanced to third base on the throw. Jessica Valis singled with a bunt. She placed the ball on the first base line and was almost on
first base when the first baseman reached the ball. Jessica is a sophomore at
Shiner. When College Sports
Exposure timed Jessica running from to home to home, she ran the distance in
11:4 seconds. Carla stole home on a catching error. Montana Patin then hit a
hard grounder between the short stop and 3rd baseman for a single. Jessica
scored on the play making the score 5-0. Storm coach made a pitching change.
He replaced Clarissa Martinez with Robin Becker. Robin struck-out
Kristina Sheppard for out No. 2. Brooker
Usher hit a grounder to the short stop who threw to 1st to get out No. 3.
Power
added another run in the 5th inning. With two outs, Kristina Sheppard hit a line
drive to left field for a single. Kristina
stole 2nd base. Brooke Usher hit a
single to center field that scored Kristina.
The score was 6-0 and Power's favor.
Austin
Storm scored a run in the 4th inning. Mandy
Phillips walked. Kial Hosmer was
tagged out at 1st base for out No. 1. Mandy
advanced to 2nd base on the play. Amanda
Swofford hit a grounder to short stop Jessica Valis who threw to first to get
out No. 2. Mandy advanced to 3rd
base on the play. Rachel Hakim hit
a ball deep in the gap between center and left field for a single. Mandy scored on the play. Robin Becker popped up out No. 3.
In
the 6th inning, with two outs, Montana hit a rocket shot to the gap between
right field and center field for a easy triple.
Kristina Sheppard walked and then stole 2nd base. The next batter
grounder out.
Cara
Patranella from Bryan, Texas pitched 3 complete innings and to a couple of
batters in the 4th inning. Cara
struck-out one batter, walked one batter and allowed no hits and no runs. College Sports Exposure radared Cara throwing between 58 and
60 mph. Erica Bryant replaced Cara in the 4th inning.
Erica get the Storm off balance with her change-up and drop ball.
Erica gave-up one run and a base hit.
She had three strike outs.
Clarissa
Martinez started on the mound for the Storm Blue. Clarissa pitched 1 and a third inning before being replaced
by Robin Becker. Clarissa gave up 5
hits and 5 runs. She walked one batter. Robin
Becker pitched 4 and 2/3 innings. She
struck-out 3 batters, walked 2 batters and gave-up 6 hits and one run.
College Sports Exposure radared Robin throwing 57 to 59 mph.
Her drop was radared at 58 mph.
Montana
Patin and Kristina Sheppard of Houston Power each had two hits.
Montana singled in the gap between short stop and 3rd base in the 2nd
inning. She hit a triple in the gap
between left and center field in the 6th inning.
Montana graduates in 2004. Kristina
singled with a bunt in the first inning and hit a line drive to left field in
the 4th inning for another single. Jessica
Valis singled with a bunt in the 2nd inning.
Brooker Usher singled to center field in the 4th inning.
Haley Valis singled to center field in the 5th inning.
Alex Colyer and Cara Beutlich hit back to back doubles in the 2nd inning.
As a team, Houston Power had 9 hits.
Austin
Storm blue had one hit. Rachel
Hakim singled to left field in the 4th inning driving in Mandy Phillips.
With
the win, Houston Power advanced to the next round in the Winners bracket where
they will face Missouri City Magic.
