June 30, 2004 - Katy Express opened their pool play at 5:15 pm at East Mapleton Fields against Richmond Diamonds from Virginia.
The game was shortened from 1 1/2 hours to 1 hour because of a big thunder storm the night before. Katy Express
got on the score board first. Kristina Tellos drew a walk. Brittany Boren then hit a ground
ball to the pitcher who threw to the short stop at 2nd base to get the force out. With Hayley Petrash at bat,
Brittany advanced to 3rd base on some wild pitches and scored on a wild pitch. Haylay hit the ball to the first
baseman who threw to the 2nd baseman covering the first base bag for out No.2. Stephanie Fry hit a ground ball
to the 2nd baseman who threw to 1st base to get the third out.
Richmond Diamonds tied the game-up in the 2nd inning. The 1st batter flied out. Then Ginny Dolan was hit by a pitch
and took first base. Tricia Davis hit the ball to the 3rd baseman who threw to the 2nd baseman covering 1st base
for the 2nd out. Andrea Hacker then singled scoring Ginny. Amber Collier then hit to the pitcher who threw to 1st to
get the 3rd out.
Katy Express struck right back in the third inning. With one out, short stop Kristina Tellos singled up the middle.
She stole 2nd base. Kristina is a player to keep your eye on. She has a great speed and uses it to get on base,
steal bases and cover a lot a ground at short stop. She is a 2006 graduate. Brittany Boren hit a grounder to the short stop
who threw to first base to get the out. Kristina advanced to 3rd base on the play. With Haylay Petrash at bat, Kristina
scored on a wild pitch. Haylay drew a walk. Stephanie Fry then hit a ground ball to the 2nd baseman who threw to first base
to the get the out.
It looked like Katy Express might add another run in the 4th inning. Left handed 1st baseman Jenny Matulich hit a line drive
shot up the middle for a single. Cory Bram was put in to run for Jennifer. Cory was caught stealing 2nd base for out No. 1.
2nd baseman Kerry Krietman then hit a line drive up the middle for a single. Tiffany Velez grounded out to the short stop for out
No. 2. Heather Kight grounded out to the pitcher to end the inning.
Emily Horne started the game on the mound for the Express. She went 3 complete innings. She did an excellent job keeping
the Richmond Diamonds off balance by placing her pitches on the corner, changing speeds and throwing breaking pitches.
She gave-up one hit and one run and walked three batters. Kimmy Lee pitched the remaining two innings. Kimmy walked one
batter and gave-up no hits or a run.
Andrea Hacker was the only player for Richmond Diamonds to get a hit. She singled in the 2nd inning. Tricia Davis hit a
a ball to left center that got by the center fielder. Left fielder Stephanie Fry ran it down and threw to 3rd to get Tricia.
Courtney Cropper started and pitched the whole game for the Richmond Diamonds. Courtney gave-up 2 singles and two doubles,
2 scores and walked 2 batters. College Sports Exposure radared Courtney throwing between 58 and 59 mph.
Jenny Matulich, Kerry Krietman, Tiffany Velez and Kristina Tellos had the hits for the Express. Jenny, Kerry and Kristina
hits are mentioned above. In the 2nd inning, Jenny also hit a line drive that looked like it was going to drop in behind
third base for a base hit but the Richmond left fielder made a spectacular catch to get the out. Tiffany Velez doubled
in the 2nd inning.
