Katy Taylor Squeaks by Cinco Ranch 1-0

by Duane  Treybig

April 5, 2002 - Tonight's Katy Taylor verse Cinco Ranch game at Cinco Ranch was a pivotal game for deciding 1st place in District 19-5A since Cinco Ranch, Katy Taylor and Katy were all tied for 1st place with a single loss. Katy Taylor entered the game armed with three Division 1 College signees. They are University of Texas at Austin signee Tina Boutelle, Texas A&M signee Rocky Spencer and Mississippi State University signee Callye Williams. Tina is the leader in batting in the Greater Houston area with a 0.563 average.  Rocky Spencer has the 5th best batting average ((0.500) in the Greater Houston area. Junior pitcher Christiana Smith was given the challenge of trying to keep these three signees off the bases and almost accomplished the task. Christina entered the game  in third place in strike-outs (126) in the Greater Houston area.

This game also displayed the Kangus brothers coaching against each other. Randy Kangus coaches at Cinco Ranch and Terry Kangus coaches at Katy Taylor in case you were wondering why the 3rd base coach never seem to change.

This game was settled early. Two time All-American Tina Boutelle hit a ground ball to the short stop and beat the throw to first. Tina stole 2nd base. Christina Smith struckout the 2nd batter for out number one. Tina scored from second base on a single on the first base side of the second base bag by Rocky Spencer. Out number two came when catcher Haley Broussard threw Rocky out at 2nd base when she tried to steal. Stephanie Figgers reached first base on an error by the Cinco Ranch short stop. Callye Williams then hit a bouncing ground ball to Christina Smith who threw to first to get the 3rd out.

Katy Taylor threatened to score again in the 6th inning but Christiana Smith successful pitched out of the jam. After Rocky Spencer flied to 3rd baseman Whitney Rawllins for out number one, Stephanie Figgers singled up the middle. Callye Williams then flew out to the right fielder Ashley Harris for out number two. Jenny Glaeser singled to right field to put runners at 1st and 2nd base. Stephanie and Jenny both advanced a base when Christiana threw a wild pitch that got by the catcher. Candace Hurst was intentionally walked to load the bases. Christina Denson then pop-out out to the 2nd baseman Evelyn Bucker who caught the ball deep behind the first baseman for out number 3.

Cinco Ranch threatened to score in the 4th inning. Evelyn Bucker singled between short stop and 3rd base. Ashley Harris popped up a bunt to a hard charging third baseman Stephanie Figgers for out number 1. Ashley Yancak hit a fly into left field for a single.  Evelyn and Ashley advanced to 3rd and 2nd base, respectively, on a wild pitch. The next batter popped up to the catcher for out number 2. Stacie Fox then hit a grounder to short stop Callye Williams to end the inning.

Christiana Smith had six strike-outs and one intentional walk while scattering 5 hits. College Sports Exposure radar Christina's peel drop at 61 mph and fastball at 64 mph in the third inning. One fast ball was radar at 66 mph. The 64 and 66 mph pitches are the fastest speeds recorded by a Greater Houston area pitcher by College Sports Exposure this year. Christina kept Katy Taylor hitting attack off-balance my mixing her fastball with an off-speed, change-up, curve and the peel drop.

Sophomore Melissa Magee was the winning pitcher. Magee had a no-hitter going until the 4th inning when Evelyn Bucker and Ashley Yancak singled. Melissa had 6 strike-outs and 2 walks, one of which was intentional in the 7 inning game.

Tina Boutelle and Rocky Spencer helped keep their batting averages at the top in the Greater Houston area. Both singled in the 1st inning. Jenny Glaeser led the Katy Taylor hitting attack with two singles, one up the middle in the 4th inning and another to right field in the 6 inning. College Sports Exposure filmed Jenny's softball video last spring. Stephanie Figgers had a single up the middle in the 6th inning.

The win by Taylor moves Katy Taylor into first place in District 19-5A.  Katy  High School is in 2nd with one loss because they had a previous loss to Taylor.
