Leal Shut-outs Lamar 3-0

by Duane  Treybig

May 3, 2001 - The Elkin Lady Knights beat the Lamar Redskins 3-0 in 5A Area play Thursday night at Cinco Ranch. Elkins plays Katy Taylor next week.

Jennifer Leal scattered 4 hits and struck out 7 batters in a shut-out performance. She kept the Lamar Redskin attack off balance with a blend of fastballs and knuckle balls.  College Sports Exposure filmed Jennifer's college softball video several weeks ago so they had a preview of her pitches.

The Knights got their winning run in the second inning when Janaya Ermel hit a slow grounder to the Lamar short stop Natalie Ramirez, and then beat the throw to first.  Brandi Clark then singled to right field, moving Janaya into scoring position. Catcher Niki Angleton picked off Brandi at first base for the first out in the inning. Tiffany Williams went down swinging for out number two. Just as it look like Lamar was going to get out of the inning without any damage, Jennifer Ballard delivered a clutch double to center field to score Janaya.  Sarah Isenhower then lined out to Natalie Ramirez to end the inning.

Lamar threatened in the 5th inning. After Mary Crowley struck out swinging, Katie Adair reached first base on a single to center field. Ashley Adair then reached first base safely on a fielder's choice. Ashley had hit a grounder to the second baseman who threw to short stop Kelly Osburn covering second base to get that second out.  Jennifer Whiteley reach first safely and moved Ashley to second. Natalie Ramirez singled to load the bases. The number three batter, Paige Schwab swung at a fastball for a strike. Paige watched a ball and took a knuckle ball for a second strike. She dug in and foul the next pitch. Leal got Paige swinging for strike number three on a tailing knuckle ball on the outside corner.

The Knights picked up two more runs in the sixth inning. Jamie Hinshaw placed a bunt down the 3rd base line that was dropped by the Lamar third baseman which allowed Jamie to beat the throw to first base. Monica Droz reached first base safely on an identical play. Kelly Osburn grounded to Beth Owens at pitcher, who threw to first base to get the first out. Janaya Ermel then lined a single to center to drive in both Jamie and Monica. Brandi Clark hit a grounder to the short stop who threw her out at first. Janaya was caught trying to steal third base for the final out.

Janaya was 3 for 3 in hitting for the night. Kelly Osburn had a double over the center fielders head in the first inning. Brandi Clark and Sarah Eisenhower each added a single in the 7 hit Knight attack.

Niki Angleton led Lamar's hitting attack with a line drive double in the gap between right and center field in the sixth inning. Paige Schwab, Natalie Ramirez and Katie Adair each added a single. Paige's single was a line drive in the hole between 3rd and SS.  Paige's Player Profile is posted on-line on the College Sports Exposure website.

Beth Owens led Lamar on the mound with 4 strike-outs. She gave up 6 hits in 6 innings. Paige Schwab pitched the final inning and gave up a hit.
