July 13, 2002 - The 2002 ASA Gold Region 7 Championship got under way Friday night
at Collins field in Spring/ Klein, Texas. 21 Teams were competing for 6 available spots
to the ASA 18U Gold National Tournament in Broken Arrow, Oklahoma to be held
July 29-Aug. 4th.
In a 8:00 am Saturday morning Winner's bracket game, South Houston 18U Mystixxs
played the Tomball Hawks. The Mystixxs reached this game by defeating the Missouri
City Magic in a Friday night game by a score of 3 to 2. This was the first tournament
game for the Hawks.
The Tomball Hawks jumped to a quick 1-0 lead in the 1st inning. Junior Deserea Griffin
lead off the inning with a double in the gap between left and center field. Jacklyn Dixon
advanced Deserea to 3rd base with a sacrifice bunt. Kim Kastmyer then hit a fly deep to
right field. Deserea tagged up and scored. Katie Trahan flied out to short stop Sharonda
McDonald to end the inning.
In the 2nd inning, the Mystixxs knotted the score up at 1-1. With 1 out, DJ Nelson
hit a ground ball single in the crease between 3rd and short stop. Krystal Patino flied out
to the center fielder for out No. 2. Jamie Ries then hit a Texas Leaguer that fell right
behind the short stop for a single. DJ scored on the play. The next batter struck out to
end the inning.
That's the way the score stayed until the International Tie Breaker inning (8th). The Mystixxs
batted first. Jennifer Knapp was the baserunner on 2nd base. Sharonda McDonald laid down a bunt
and beat the throw to 1st base. Katie Ferrell bunted and reached first on a fielder's choice.
Bases were loaded. Amy Parker popped up to the short stop, Deserea Griffin for out No. 1. Becki
dela Garza then hit a ground ball single up the middle that scored Jennifer Knapp and Sharonda
McDonald. DJ Nelson then hit a ground ball to the 2nd baseman who threw to first to get DJ.
The first baseman alertly saw Becki rounding 2nd and fired to the short stop who tagged her out.
Tomball countered with Kim Cook (2003 Graduate) on 2nd base. Kim advanced to 3rd base on a wild pitch.
Brittany Hodge single to left field scoring Kim. But that was the last
score. Courtney McInnerney bunted foul on the 3rd strike, Deserea Griffin popped up to the short stop and Jaclyn Dixon struck-out.
Katie Trahan pitched the whole game for the Tomball Hawks. Katie will be attending Southwest
Texas in San Marcos for the 2002-2003 season on a softball scholarship. She had 8 strike-outs, walked one batter and
scattered 7 hits. College Sports Exposure radar her fast ball at 60 mph and her drop
at 58 mph.
Her drop was falling off the table.
Lindsy Keller pitched the whole game for the Mystixxs. Lindsy is a 2003 Graduate. Lindsy had 5
strike-outs, one walk and gave-up 5 hits. Lindsy primarily used a blend of change-ups and screw
balls. College Sports Exposure radar her screw ball at 59 mph in the 2nd inning.
Lee Lara from Navasota (Stephen F. Austin University Signee) led the 5-hit attack with two singles.
She single in the 2nd inning and single to right center in the 7th inning. Deserea Griffin led off the
game with a double to center field. Jacyln Dixon had a single to left field in the 3rd inning.
Katie Trahan hit a ground ball single between the short stop and the 2nd base bag in the 4th inning.
Sharonda McDonald led the Mystixxs 7-hit attack. She hit a double to deep left in the 2nd inning
and reach first safely on a bunt single in the International Tie Breaker inning. Amy Parker (1270 SAT)
hit a line drive single between the short stop and the 2nd base bag in the 6th inning. Becki dela Garza
had a game winning ground ball single up the middle in the International Tie Breaker inning.
DJ Nelson and Jamie Ries singled in the 2nd inning. Eryn Smith singled up the middle in the 5th inning.
