Pheonix Storm Blow by Spring/ Klein Hawks 3-2

by Duane  Treybig

June  7, 2002 - The 2002 ASA Sector Gold Qualifier at Killeen, Texas got started at 8:00 pm with games at Lions Park in Killeen and at Evans Field at Ft. Hood. 33 Gold teams started the event.

Before the first game I talked to a few Div. 1 coaches. I learned that most Div. I coaches already have a top 15 player list before this tournament. The list is primarily compiled from scouting players that were sophomores the previous summer and juniors the previous fall. This tells me that it is important to get your resume and travel team schedule in to the Div. I coaches in Sept. of the junior year to get some scouts during the fall especially if the coaches missed you during the summer.

College Sports Exposure selected to watch the Spring/ Klein Hawks play Pheonix Storm from Arizona at 8:00 pm on field 4 at Evans Field. The Hawks had advanced to Nationals last summer by winning the ASA Gold Tournament at Katy.

The game was scoreless until the 3 inning. The Hawks drew first blood by scoring first. With one out, Kristy Maddox singled to left field. Lead off batter, Kelly Gayle drew a walk. Annie Beckendorf then put down a bunt. Catcher Sami Baugh retrieved the bunt and threw high and wide to first. Both Kristy and Kelly scored on the throwing error. Annie ended up at 2nd base. Pheonix coach made a important pitching change. He replaced started Becky McDonald with Courtnay Foster. Courtney struck-out the next batter and Staci Ramsey flied out to the short stop for out No.3.

Pheonix tied the game with their at bat. Adrienne Acton took first base after being hit with a pitch. With a full count, Katie Logan singled to the gap between left and center field. Megan Schwab hit the ball back to the pitcher who threw to 1st for out No. 1. Jodi Norton then walked loading the bases. 3rd Baseman Staci Ramsey injured her hand diving for a fly ball while trying to avoid a collision with catcher Kelly Greer. Sami Baugh hit the ball to the new 3rd baseman who had just entered the game. She threw to home to get the force but the ball got by the catcher and both Adriene and Katie scored. Shannon Carmien also hit the ball to the new 3rd baseman. Jodi was thrown out at home for out No. 2. Shannon reached first on a fielder's choice. Tessie Winterton then hit a hot line drive to the Hawks first baseman Lauren Hudson (from Clements High School) for out No. 3.

Pheonix broke the tie (2-2) in the 4th inning. After the first batter struck-out, Michelle Lemons batting from the left side of the plate, ripped a line drive in the gap between the center and right fielders. The next batter struck-out. Michelle had worked her way to 2nd base, when Katie Logan line drive for a double in the gap between the center and right fielders. Michelle scored on the play.

One time her drop was radar at 61 mph and another time her fastball at 63 mph. Her mother mentioned that Christina was recovering from an illness that had lingered on for about a month.
