Cheri Wood Shuts Out Fort Bend Austin 2-0

by Duane  Treybig

March 14, 2001 - It was the type of game you would expect from two of the District 20-5A top contenders, Fort Bend Austin and Clements High School.  Clements came into the game with a 10-2 District record sitting in 1st place.  Austin was back at third place with a 9-3 record.

The game was tied 0-0 in the 6th inning, as Clements came up to bat.  Senior Amanda Oliphant  got things started for Clements by hitting a line drive with some air under it to right field.  Austin right fielder, Leah Gwosdz made an acrobatic catch but couldn't hang on to the ball.  As Leah was gaining her balance and looking for the ball, Amanda took advantage of the situation and reached 2nd base.  Lauren Hudson immediately hit a double in the gap between left and center field and the score was 1-0 in Clements favor.  Shannon Allen was thrown out at first base on a bunt for the first out.  Then Lauren Connell hit a double to left field scoring Lauren Hudson to make it 2-0.  Kelly Ann Schrock then hit a hard grounder to Lauren Gobar and reached first base on an error. The next Clements batter struck-out looking and the Sarah Sioman grounder out to the second baseman to end the inning.

It look like Austin wasn't through, as Heather Houlihan hit a double over the left fielder.  Leah Gwosdz then stroke a similar ball but this time the left fielder came up with the ball for the first out.  Tricia Winston struck-out for the 2nd out and Natalie Hewitt flew out to center for the game's last out!

Cheri Wood was the winning pitcher going the whole distance for Clements.  Cheri improved her record to 14-2.  Cheri used an assortment of movement and off-speed pitches to keep Austin batters off balance.  Cheri had 4 strike-outs, three of them coming from very well disguised change-ups.  Cheri scattered  Austin's 6 hits.

Junior Nicole Ouzoonian (19-8) went the whole distance for Austin and had an equally impressive pitching performance.  Nicole had 2 strike-outs but gave up only 4 hits.  Unfortunately, two of the hits were in the 6 inning.

Freshman Natalie Hewitt and senior Nickie Vork led the Austin hitting attacking, each with a single and double.  Also,  junior Heather Houlihan had a double and  senior Kristen Godfrey a single.  Heather also had a good defensive game picking-off a runner at 1st base with two outs from her catcher position.  Kristen had a good defensive game, fielding several flys that looked like they were going to be hits.

The doubles by Lauren Hudsen and Lauren Connell led the Clements attack.  Sarah Sioman and Shannon Allen added singles.

Clements is 20-8 for the season and 11-2 in district.  Austin is 22-9 for the season and 9-4 in district.
