South Houston 16U-A Mystixxs Celebrate the 4th of July as they Explode Pass the Spring Klein Sliders by a Score of 6-1

by Duane  Treybig

July 4, 2002 - The South Houston Mystixxs and Spring Klein Sliders met in a 9:00 pm game at Burroughs Park in Tomball to see who would continue in the Winner's Bracket. This was a highly explosive game since fireworks were continually being shot in the air in celebration of the Fourth of July. I salute the girls in this game because they stayed focus as the rest of the Nation celebrated the 4th of July.

As in the earlier game, the scoring didn't start until the 3rd inning. With one out, Stephanie Myers went to 1st base when she was hit by a pitch. The next batter struck-out. The run explosion started when Danielle Betancourt laid down a bunt. The Slider catcher pounced on the ball but her throw was wide. As the right fielder chased down the throw, Stephanie scored and Danielle reached 3rd. The Mystixxs added to the 1-0 lead when Kim Chavez laid down a bunt. Same scenario! The Slider catcher pounced on the ball and her throw was wide. When the smoke cleared, Danielle had scored and Kim was safe at first. Kim Chavez eventually reached 3rd base and scored on a wild pitch when Krista Sitka was batting to make the score 3-0. Krista drew a walk. Lauren Muse grounded out to the short stop to end the inning.

Spring Klein Sliders got into the scoring act in the 5th inning. Melissa Sauls drew a walk. Then Alison Parker hit a Texas Leaguer that fell behind the 1st base bag. Jackie Miller then grounded out to short stop. On the play the throw was low and Mystixxs 1st baseman Lindsey Ferguson caught the short hopper like it was a routine throw! Melissa moved to 3rd base and Alison to 2nd base on the play. The pitcher, Kristina Trygstad then hit a line drive to the gap between left and center field. Melissa scored, but Alison was tagged out at the plate by the Mystixxs catcher Chelsea Blakely after a fine throw home from center fielder Kim Chavez. Kristina took advantage of the play at the plate and reached 3rd base. Unfortunately, the next batter struck-out to end the inning.

The Mystixxs added 3 more runs in the 6th inning. Krista Sitka hit a fly over the left fielder's head for a double. Lauren Muse popped out to the 1st baseman for the 1st out. Jennifer Walsh flew out to the left fielder. Then Lindsey Ferguson hit a line drive to the right center gap for a single that Krista scored on from 2nd base. Chelsea Blakely drew a walk which moved Lindsey to 2nd. The Sliders switched pitchers at this point, bringing in Jackie Miller for Kristina Trygstad. Lindsey advanced to 3rd base and Chelsea advanced to 2nd base on a wild pitch. Stephanie Myers then deleivered a line drive in the gap between right and center field that Lindsey and Chelsea scored on. Stephanie advanced to 2nd base on the throw to the plate to get Chelsea. The next batter flied out to end the inning.

The Mystixxs pitcher was Lauren Garza. She pitched the whole game, mixing her drop and rise with an occasional change-up. Lauren had 7 strike-outs in the 6-1 win, walking only one batter. Lauren gave-up 2 hits.

Kristina Trygstad went 5 full innings before being relieved in the 6th. Kristina had 4 strike-outs, two walks and hit a batter with a pitch. Kristina gave up 3 hits. Kristina was relieved in the 6 inning by left handed pitcher Jackie Miller. Jackie gave up a base hit.

The Mystixxs 4-hit attack was led by Krista Sitka double in the 6th inning. Danielle Betancourt had a single to left field in the 5th inning. Lindsey Ferguson and Stephanie Myers both singled to right center in the 6th inning.

The Sliders 3-hit attack was led by Amanda Surman double in the 4th inning. Melissa Sauls singled to the left center field gap in the 4th inning and Kristina hit the 1 RBI scoring single to left center field in the 5th inning.

The Mystixxs advanced in the Winners bracket with the 6-1 win. They will play the Katy Express in a Friday night 9:00 game. The Katy Express advanced by beating the Spring Klein Velocity by a score of 2-1 in another 9:00 pm game. The Sliders play Cy-Fair Storm in an elimination game Friday at 7:00 pm.
