7, 2003 - Texas
Elite from Grand Prairie played South Houston Mystixxs in a 10:45 am Saturday
morning game at the 2003 ASA Girl's 18U "Gold"
Sector 3 Qualifier. The game was a
2nd round game in the Winners bracket and was scoreless until the 9th inning
(2nd International Tie Breaker inning).
In the 9th inning, Christina Allen of Texas Elite started on 2nd base because of the International
Tie Breaker rule. The next batter, Katie Johnson, reached second base on a throwing error by the
3rd baseman. Christina advanced to 3rd base on the play. Katie stole 2nd base to put runners at
3rd and 2nd. Katye Muller hit a fly ball to center field for Out No. 1. The runners did not advance.
Pinch hitter Stephanie Pullen hit a weak grounder in the infield for a single and reached first base.
There was some confusion by the Mystixxs pitcher, 3rd baseman and 1st baseman on who should field
the ball. Samantha Buckner hit a Pop-up to deep left field for Out No. 2. Christina Allen tagged
up and beat the throw home for the Elite's only run. Paige Paramore popped up for the 3rd Out.
Since the Mystixxs were the home team, it was their turn at bat. Sue Logan was the International Tie
Breaker runner at 2nd base. Adriane Rocha hit a grounder to the right side of the infield and reached 1st
base on a fielder's choice. Terann Rode struck-out for out No. 1. Sharonda McDonald then
popped-up to pitcher Megan Denny. The ball deflected out of the pocket of her
glove into foul territory. Sharonda was out on the infield fly rule and Sue Logon and Adriane Rocha advanced to 3rd and 2nd base, respectively.
Katie Ferrel then struck-out to end the game.
Obviously this was a pitcher's dual. Ursula Mares pitched the whole game for the Mystixxs. She threw
a lot of rises. On some ocassions, she mixed the rise with a drop. The Elite were constantly swinging
over or under her pitches. Ursula struck-out 13 batters, walked one batter and gave-up one hit in the
9th inning to Stephanie Pullen. College Sports Exposure radared Ursula's pitches in the 5th inning between 58 and 59 mph.
Megan Denny from Crowley, Texas was equally as dominating as Ursula. She pitched a no-hitter.
Megan had 12 strike-outs and walked two batters. Megan threw primarily fastballs and a peel drop.
She sprinkled in a rise, curve and a change-up. College Sports Exposure radared Megan's pitches between
63 and 65 mph in the 3rd inning.
