Texas Mystixxs Mystify Katy Express 11-3 in Boulder Winners Bracket Game

June 3, 2004 - The game was a first round bracket game at the Louisville Slugger Independence Day Tournament in Boulder, Colorado. The Mystixxs broke this game open early. With one out, Adrianne Roche hit the ball over the fence for a homerun. Tamara Bradley then doubled to center field. Eleni Coronado doubled to center field to score Tamara.
Kara Rau double to center field to score Eleni. Kara advanced to 3rd base on a bad throw from the outfield. Lindsey Ferguson grounded out to the 2nd baseman for out No. 2. Kara scored on this play to give Mystixxs a 4-0 lead. Traci Howard from Sante Fe then popped up to the short stop for out No. 3.

The Express countered with three runs in the 3rd inning. Heather Kight singled to left field. Kristina Tellos was safe at 1st with a base hit from a left side drag. Brittany Boren laid down a sacrifice bunt to the pitcher for Out No. 1. She moved the runners to 3rd and 2nd base on the play. Kerry Krietman was safe at first on a bunt. Kristina scored on the play to give the Express their first run. Haylay Petrash then singled to right center. Her single scored another run. Pitcher Cori Bram then hit a ball to the short stop and reached 1st base on a fielder's choice. Bases were loaded. Jennifer Matulich then hit a fly ball deep to the fence that was caught by Jesse Salas for out No. 2. Kerry Krietman tagged up and scored on the play to bring the score to 4-3, Mystixxs favor. Tiffany Velz flied out to the left fielder for out No. 3.

Now it was the Mystixxs turn at bat. Eleni Coronado singled to left center. Kara Rau singled up the middle. Lindsey Ferguson doubled to left field bringing home Eleni. Traci Howard singled to left field and moved to second on a error by the left fielder. The score was 6-3. Stephanie Myers singled to left field. Jesse Salas singled to right field.  Iver Mc Donald single to left field. Adrianne Roche flied out to left field for out No. 1. Tamara Bradley drew a 
walk. Eleni Coronado doubled. Kara Rau drew a walk. This loaded the bases. Lindsey Ferguson grounded to 3rd baseman Tiffany Velez who threw to home for the force out. Traci Howard hit a grounder to Tiffany Velez and Tiffany threw home to get the force and final out of the inning. The score was 11-3, Mystixxs favor.

Lauren Garza (2005) pitched the whole game for the Mystixxs. She kept the Express off balance with her screw ball, curve ball and rise. She had two strike-outs with no walks and gave-up 5 hits.

Express used three pitchers in this game. Cori Bram started the game. Kimmy Lee came in to finish out the 1st inning.  She was replaced in the 2nd inning with Emily Horne because of an injury. Emily pitched the 2nd and part of the 3rd inning. Cori Bram finished the 3rd inning. All together, the pitchers gave up 13 hits, walked three batters and struck-out 2 batters.
Emily Horne got both of the strike-outs.

Kristina Tellos, Haylay Petrash, Jennifer Matulich and Heather Kight got the hits for the Katy Express. Kristina had a drag single in the 3rd inning. Haylay had a single to right center in the 3rd inning. Jennifer had a line drive single to right field in the 2nd inning. Jennifer also brought home a run with a fly to deep right field in the 3rd inning. Heather Kight was the Express's shining star. She had a single to left field in the 3rd inning and a line drive single to left field in the 4th inning.

Jennifer Matulich finished the tournament with an outstanding 0.444 batting average in 10 trips to the plate in the pool and bracket games. The Express did not play any practice games. All of Jenny's four base hits were clean singles through the infield. She walked once. Jenny was 1 for 2 against the Richmond Diamonds. She was o for 2 against the Oregon Sun Supply. Against Oregon Sun Supply, she grounded out twice to the 1st baseman. Jenny singled once against the Florida Mustangs. She also hit a very good line drive to left field in her first at bat but the left fielder made an outstanding catch. Jenny singled and walked against the California Corona Angels. She did not strike-out one time in the tournament. Jennifer's performance is even more remarkable when you consider that Katy Express loss 7 out of 8 games at Boulder. Even
though Express was struggling, Jenny kept positive and worked hard to find ways to help the team.
