June 8, 2002 - Frequently we
read or have watched a softball game where the pitcher dominants the game or
steals the show. In this game, a hitter quickly changed the outcome of a
tight game and in essence, stole the show.
At 10:00am Saturday morning, Texas Storm played Austin Red Storm. This was a looser bracket game, but plenty of college coaches were there to see if Texas Storm would rebound from their
Friday night lost to Fear This! Austin Storm lost Friday night to the Lady Wranglers.
Both teams started out tight probably because they didn't want to be the team eliminated. In the 2nd inning, Texas Storm scored. Tiffany Garcia hit a line drive in the gap between right and center field for a double with one out. Lacy Howard stepped up to the plate and blasted a line drive over the center field fence. The score was 2-0 and Texas Storm appeared more relaxed.
In the third inning, Texas Storm added more runs to their lead. With one out, Joey Scarf hit a line drive over the short stop head for a single. With a 1-1 count, Laura Durham hit a line drive down the right field line for a clean double. This moved Joey to third. Erin Crandle then popped up to the catcher for out No. 2. Christa Raley hit a grounder to the short stop who threw the ball in the dirt to the first baseman. Both Joey and Laura scored on the play. Christa made it to 2nd. Tiffany Garcia then hit a line drive that fell in front of the center fielder. Christa scored on the play. Lacy Howard then hit her second homerun, a towering blast over the fence between center and left field for 2 more RBI's. At this point, Texas Storm led 7-0. Austin Storm made a pitching change. They brought in Robin Becker for Jessica Sander. Monica Garcia reached first on an error by the short stop. Robin struck-out the next batter to get out of the inning.
Robin pitched the next two innings for Storm Red. She allowed no runs, two singles and struck-out three batters. Jessica gave up 6 hits, hit a batter with a pitch and struck-out two batters.
Sarah Lancour started the game for Texas Storm. She pitched 3 full innings before being relieved by Erica Bryant. Sarah gave up 4 singles and a walk. She struck-out 4 batters. College Sports Exposure radar Sarah's screw ball at 58-61 mph. At the end of the game, the umpire behind the plate came up to me and asked me what speed Sarah had been throwing because he was impressed with her speed.
Erica gave up one hit, one walk and struck-out one batter.
Amanda Swofford had two singles in three at bats for the Storm Red. Krystal Alvarez-Martinez, Clari Martinez, Rachael Hakim each had a single.
Laura Durham joined Lacy Howard with a two for three performance. In the fourth inning Laura beat the throw to first when her grounder deflected off the pitcher's glove to the short stop.
