Too Much POWER for the Illinois Rebels

by Duane  Treybig

June 28, 2003 -  Houston Power and the Illinois Rebels met in an early 8:00 am pool game at East Mapleton Fields in the Louisville Slugger Independence Day Softball Tournament in Boulder, Colorado. I sat on the Houston Power side of the field. The parents talked about how Coach John Glowacz considered this Power team the best hitting team he
has ever had. I haven't heard this from John, but it sure sounds good!

Houston Power opened the game with a run in the first inning. Jessica Valis got on first with a slapped single. Amy Krueger then hit a double to left center scoring Jessica. Brook Usher reach first safely on a bunt. But then Alex Colyer grounded out to 3rd, Kristina Sheppard popped up to 3rd and Tiffany Dahlquist flew out to left field.

Houston Power displayed their stick power in the 2nd inning. 2004 Left fielder Montana Patin hit the ball over the center fielder head for a double. Carla Beutlich moved Montana to 3rd was a sacrifice bunt. 2004 Right fielder Crystal Seipel then hit a single to center field that scored Montana. Jessica Valis reached first safely on an error by the first baseman from a left side bunt. Amy Kruegger then hit the ball deep to the center fielder who dropped the catch. Crystal and Jessica scored on the play. Brooker Usher then hit a double down the left field
line that scored Amy. At this point the score was 5-0. The Illnois Rebel coach replaced the starting pitcher, Lindsey Christensen with Alexis Tomaras. Alex Colyer singled. Kristina Sheppard flew out to center field for out No. 2. Tiffany Dahlquist then hit a homerun out of the park. The score was 8-0. Montana hit her second double of the inning. Cara Petranella singled up the middle. Montana scored on the play to make the score 9-0. Crystal Seipel popped up to the 3rd baseman to end the inning.

Illinois had three hits. Kari Hudson singled to right field in the 1st inning. Kristen Kratky singled in the 2nd inning. Laura Forsch singled in the 4th inning.

Haley Valis added a single to the 9 hits in the first two innings for Power in the third inning.

The game was called after the 3rd innings on the 3rd inning run rule.

Jessica Ivins pitched all three innings for the Power in the 9-0 shut-out. Jessica struck-out three batters, walked none and scattered three hits. Jessica kept the Rebels hitting attack off-balance with her fast ball spotted on the outside corner, rise and change-up.

Lindsey Christensen pitched 1 1/3 innings for the Rebels. She gave-up 6 hits. Alexis Tomaras pitched the remaining 1 2/3 innings. She struck-out one batter, walked none and gave-up 5 hits.

Just too much Power!
